About the project

The challenge:
Maastricht University wants to be able to regulate parking traffic in order to make maximum use of the various parking facilities. The university wants to be able to decide for each branch which groups are permitted to park there and to prevent visitors from using the parking facilities around the city center for a day of shopping. Traditional barriers, intercom systems, and parking passes for each individual branch do not allow for regulation of the parking spaces. The university was also unable to keep traffic of visitor flows and how long users were parking their cars. They were therefore looking for a state-of-the-art and scalable system that would facilitate user-friendly and efficient parking management. -
The solution:
WPS has equipped several branches of the university with the state-of-the-art, user-friendly parking management system ParkID and the corresponding ParkAdvance parking equipment. We implemented a single platform that linked all branches through a network connection. For one, parking management is possible both locally and centrally. The system is flexible and can be fully adapted to these changing needs and requirements, for example if Maastricht University were to decide to switch to paid or ticketless parking. Staff and students enter and exit the facility using a MIFARE® pass and visitors receive a parking pass on arrival.
Visitors must report to the reception desk of the branch in question on departure, after which the parking pass is recoded to a time slot within which the visitor must leave the parking facility. This helps to prevent visitors from using the parking facility for extended periods of time (for example to go into the city center) and from keeping parking spaces occupied unnecessarily.

The result:
The ParkID solution we created for Maastricht University has provided them with a state-of-the-art and user-friendly parking management system that can be easily adapted to new requirements. The new system is better equipped to regulate the parking facilities and makes management data available. The university can now keep track of parking duration, visitor flows, and peak-time traffic, based on which it can then optimize its parking management.
